They all essentially refer to the process of making a small cut with a laser to the surface of the eye, which when it heals will create better vision. Lasik Surgery has a unique history. The discovery of vision correction surgery came from a Russian ophthalmologist in 1973. Svyatoslav N. Fyodorov , M.D. was treating a patient of his after glass fragments had cut the cornea in his eyes. Dr. Fyodorov became fascinated with his discovery that the boys vision actually improved after the cuts in his cornea healed. In 1978 , Leo Bores , M.D. brought RK the the US and was ridiculed for many years because most eye doctors of the time felt that it was madness to operate on perfectly healthy eyes. Today RK is no longer considered a experimental surgery. In 1995 the FDA approved excimer laser for PRK to correct nearsightedness. |
